Syracuse, NY's 95X (WAQX) and Stern
Beginning on November 29, 2004, Citadel (which owns six stations carrying the Howard Stern show in four markets, including three "Class A" signals that combine to cover the Providence, RI market) began cutting off the show promptly at 10 AM. This lead to some sharp comments being made by Stern on-air concerning Citadel, but in particular the Syracuse market, where the midday DJ on Citadel-owned 95X (the Stern affiliate in the market), Ryno, wrote a decisively anti-Stern commentary on his page on 95X's website.
95X began running a disclaimer from Darren Smith, the general manager of WAQX (95X), on Friday, December 3, 2004 (or perhaps earlier, but this is the first reported airing that I know of taking place). I've obtained the disclaimer; thanks to Brian Hofer from SyracuseBroadcast.com for the audio.
Transcript:
"This is 95X General Manager Darren Smith. For eight years we have aired the Howard Stern show on 95X. As you have heard, Howard is soon leaving broadcast radio. When that happens, you would have to buy new equipment and pay a monthly fee to continue hearing Stern. It's unfortunate that Howard has chosen to make that move, which costs his fans hundreds of dollars to get what they've had for free. Our pledge is many more years of the best quality radio at no charge to you. Thanks for 27 years of support for 95X and our sponsors."
