August 2005 News Archive

LATEST NEWS:

August 1, 2005
Don Geronimo (real name: Mike Sorce) made an emotional return to the Don & Mike show today, giving a very personal and emotional account of his experiences from the past three weeks. Going "out of character", he showed an extremely personal and vulnerable side in sharing with the audience what he had gone through. As a listener, I found it to be an incredibly powerful show.

Opie & Anthony announced today that Ron & Fez are joining their High Voltage radio channel, doing the 11 AM-2 PM Eastern timeslot beginning later this month. O&A have hinted that other shows will be joining them (being given "golden tickets", as O&A put it); Scott Ferrall is rumored to be the next host to join the lineup.

Robert Feder's article in today's Chicago Sun-Times reveals a shocker: Infinity and Emmis are negotiating a deal that would send Mancow to Infinity to take over mornings on WCKG, replacing Howard Stern on September 22, which is the first day of the Fall ratings book for Chicago. The deal would also put Mancow on six other "large market" Infinity stations.

Howard Stern revealed in an interview with Adam Carolla that one of the two mystery stations that Carolla is expected to get from Stern (along with Los Angeles and San Diego) will be KITS/San Francisco.

August 5, 2005
All Access reports that KATZ/St. Louis may replace recently fired morning hosts DJ Kaos and Sylli Asz with syndicated morning team Star & Buc Wild.

In a very ominous note, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has hired Penny Nance as special advisor to the FCC's Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Analysis. Nance, who previously worked as a lobbyist for a number of anti-indecency groups, has personally spoken out in favor of stricter indecency enforcement and claimed that basic cable has a "huge indecency problem", according to Mediaweek. Cable, it should be noted, is NOT subject to FCC indecency regulation, which makes Nance's appointment all the more troubling for those who are opposed to government intervention in free market choice in program content.

Back to square one: WSHP (classic rock 95.3 The Rocket) and WLFF (country 95.7 The Wolf) have swapped broadcast positions... again! In March 2004, the two stations swapped dial positions; at the time it made sense, as it put The Rocket on the 95.3 frequency, which has a stronger reach to the north (and less overlap from Indianapolis' WFBQ, which is also a classic rock station and the flagship for the Bob & Tom show, which also airs on The Rocket). The switch back makes no sense to me, unless more changes are in store...

Lex & Terry have landed a new affiliate: KRAO-FM in Colfax, WA. It's known as 102.5 The Crow, though Lex & Terry's website refers to it as "Rock 102-5".

August 16, 2005
KLSX/Los Angeles is now streaming, which means that the Tom Leykis show and the John & Jeff show can be heard online live in their entirety.

August 29, 2005
Star & Buc Wild have now landed a seventh station, 94.1 The Beat (WQBT) in Savannah, GA.

Bob & Tom are now on some new stations as well. Last week they debuted on 97.7 The River (KVRV) in Santa Rosa, CA. Today they began on Real Classic Rock 104.9/105.5 (WWRT/WWRE) in the Winchester, VA market.

A deal to bring Mancow to Infinity Broadcasting's WCKG/Chicago (and put him on other Infinity-owned stations) has fallen apart, according to this article by Robert Feder in today's Chicago Sun-Times.

August 31, 2005
Some Bob & Tom changes: Rock 105 (WRTR) has moved from 105.5 to 105.9 and switched its city of license from Tuscaloosa, AL to Brookwood, AL (and upgraded from a Class A to a Class C3). Ironically, the switch of the city of license actually gives Rock 105 better coverage in Tuscaloosa. The station used to be a John Boy & Billy affiliate, but it had overlap in Tuscaloosa with WZRR/Birmingham (also a JB&B affiliate) so it dropped JB&B in favor of Bob & Tom in January 2004.

Also, Bob & Tom have picked up two auxillary stations simulcasting Fox 102.3 (WFXN-FM/Galion, OH) in Mansfield, OH: 107.7 (WBZW, to become WXXF/Loudonville, OH) and 98.3 (WWBK, to become WXXR/Fredericktown, OH). The station's website (foxclassicrock.com) is now promoting itself as "The Fox Rock Network", with 102.3 promoted the largest, but with 107.7 and 98.3 also now promoted. 102.3 provides coverage to the west and into Mansfield; 98.3 provides coverage in Mansfield and to the south; 107.7 provides coverage east of Mansfield, with distant coverage into the southwest Akron suburbs.
