May 2004 News Archive

May 31, 2004
Nothing official is on the Opie & Anthony website about this, but the latest rumor remains that they are expected to reveal their new broadcasting home this week. Remember, this is radio, so it could be a stunt, but I have a strong feeling that we'll find out more soon about their future.

Meanwhile, it appears that Tom Leykis will be going to tape delay (in the 11 PM Eastern timeslot) at Baltimore's WXYV (Live 105.7) from his present live evening drive slot, as DCRTV.com reports that WJFK-FM's Ron & Fez will be simulcast on the station as part of their new agreement with Infinity.

May 27, 2004
The Bob & Tom page is now updated to reflect that they are now only heard on WKLS Atlanta (their simulcast on WMAX-FM ended on 5/17, as that station picked back up the MJ Morning Show out of Tampa).

May 26, 2004
Radio & Records reports that Sirius is talking to Howard Stern, Mancow and Opie & Anthony about the possibility of working for the company.

May 25, 2004
Lex & Terry have lost their only Arkansas affiliate, as KKZR Little Rock has dropped them in favor of a local morning show.

May 24, 2004
As previously announced, Lex & Terry debuted today in Miami on WZTA. If Vegas posted odds on things like this, I'd wager that they'll be jumping to Clear Channel from Cox when their syndication deal with Cox expires next year.

Meanwhile, Howard Stern continues to complain on-air about the butchering that his show receives from censors at many affiliates (particularly the Infinity O&Os). FMQB.com quoted Stern as saying, "It's ridiculous. I want out, I want to go work for another medium where I can talk and not worry if Slash says the F-word. I want that, I crave it now. I want out of this."

Finally, Opie & Anthony will finally be able to return to radio beginning on June 1 (for the first time since the infamous "Sex For Sam 3" incident in August 2002). They are almost surely destined for satellite radio, and will join Bubba The Love Sponge as the hottest two shows on the free agent market. If either XM or Sirius is able to snag them both, that would be quite a coup (you could build an entire marketing campaign about having both shows on one Hot Talk channel...)

May 19, 2004
The Monsters of the Midday have the "interim" part of their title removed on the WXTB website, implying that they will be the long-term replacement for Bubba The Love Sponge on the station.

May 17, 2004
Bob & Tom are making another major market breakthrough, as they've been signed by KSJO San Jose for morning drive. They begin there tomorrow. The station's former morning drive program, The Mikey Show, is heading down to San Diego to KIOZ (which had been the home of Howard Stern before Clear Channel dropped Stern from all of its stations earlier this year).

May 14, 2004
WFBQ (Bob & Tom's flagship station) has a new program director, as Scott Jameson has been promoted to Director of FM programming for Clear Channel Indianapolis (he also oversees modern rock WRZX).

May 13, 2004
In a major move, Lex & Terry have landed WZTA Miami (94.9 Zeta). The station has shifted back to active rock from modern rock (which is the reverse of what it did in the summer of 2002); Lex & Terry are scheduled to debut on the station on 5/24. Meanwhile, incumbent morning show Paul & Ron are shifting over to WBGG-FM Miami (Big 106), which is going to be rebranding itself as "105.9 FM, Miami's Classic Rock Station."

May 11, 2004
There's still no word on who will replace Bob & Tom on WMAX-FM (Real Radio 105.3) in Atlanta, so for now Bob & Tom are being carried on both that station and WKLS (96 Rock). Rumor has it that Clear Channel wanted to bring in Lex & Terry for 96 Rock but that Cox (L&T's distributor) nixed the move, citing "competitive reasons." That makes zero sense considering that Cox doesn't have a rock-formatted station in the market, but that's what I've heard. This is a strong example of the potential downside of a company owning both stations and syndication networks.

May 4, 2004
I've added Greaseman and The Monsters of the Morning to the list of shows listed on the site. Also, I personally called WHHZ in Gainesville to confirm that they no longer carry Bob & Tom (we reported that last month, but with WHHZ and B&T still listing an existing affiliation on their respective websites, I wanted to be sure). However, I also added the latest six new affiliates to the Bob & Tom page (they're up to 141 now).

May 3, 2004
Atlanta is receiving a double-dose of Bob & Tom -- at least for the time being. Clear Channel's WKLS is now airing the Premiere syndicated show (which replaces The Regular Guys, who were fired last month). Bob & Tom also currently air on sister station WMAX-FM, though Clear Channel says it plans to put another morning show on WMAX-FM soon.
