October 2005 News Archive

LATEST NEWS:

October 3, 2005
Lex & Terry are in "Best Of" mode, as their distribution deal with Cox Broadcasting (and the contract that kept them on WFYV-FM in Jacksonville) expired this past Friday. All Access reports that Lex & Terry have a deal in place with Clear Channel pending, which comes as no surprise since L&T have openly complained in the past about how Cox Broadcasting has failed to support them when it comes to putting them on more Cox-owned stations.

Clear Channel has signed Lex & Terry, and today the show broadcast from WZZR in West Palm Beach (it will do so for the rest of the week). With the show leaving Cox Broadcasting, it means the end of it airing on Jacksonville's Rock 105 (WFYV-FM), Tulsa's Rock 102.3 (KRTQ) and Tampa/Sarasota's 102.5 The Bone (WHPT). The show now faces a 120 day non-compete in Jacksonville, though it will reportedly return to Jacksonville next week to broadcast from Clear Channel's studios there (though the show won't air in Jacksonville until the non-compete expires).

Bob & Tom didn't take long to find a new outlet in Columbus, OH, as they've been picked up by Variety Hits 103.9 Ted FM (WTDA). Late last month, the show was dropped by 105.7 The Fox (WFJX), which shifted from classic rock to 80s rock as 105.7 The Brew (with new call letters WBWR). Early complaints from Columbus are that it's harder to pick up Ted FM than The Brew, even though both are Class A stations (since Ted FM's tower is located to the north of the metro, whereas The Brew's is located in the heart of the city).

As suspected, Bob & Tom's simulcast in Bangor has been split in half, with 97.7 WNSX becoming Smooth Rock 97.7 (classic hits) and dropping Bob & Tom, while 101.7 WFZX retained the Fox classic rock format and the B&T show. The coverage loss is mostly east of Bangor, in a low-populated area between Bar Harbor and Machias.

Bubba The Love Sponge has been working with Howard Stern's new Howard 100 channel on Sirius Satellite Radio. With the way that the FCC's unchallenged rampage has put terrestrial radio programmers into a perpetual state of fear, Hot Talk on terrestrial radio has been extremely stifled since January 2004. All I can say on that is: thank goodness for satellite radio.

Mancow has gained another clearance, this time in Boise, ID on 100.3 The X (KQXR) as of October 17.

Howard Stern said on his radio show this morning that he heard that he was going to be abruptly knocked off of "two or three" of his affiliates by JACK-FM, which is a brand of the Variety Hits radio format that is becoming quite popular in the United States and Canada. Currently, Stern airs in morning drive on two Jack stations: WBUF in Buffalo and KFJK in Fresno. Stern said that at "8 am" he would be knocked off, from what he heard. The speculation has had the radio world speculating like crazy about which stations might be the ones to flip, and Infinity Broadcasting is keeping tight-lipped on the topic for now. Stern also speculated that today could very well be his final day, and that the "Free FM" talk radio format (first mentioned on radiobb.com) which Stern talked about last week could be brought in sooner than anticipated. We'll find out tomorrow morning how it will play out.

Howard Stern is remaining on his syndicated radio show, though the news came out today about who will be replacing him, and where. Here's the full list of who will be landing what stations. Rover gets five stations; Adam Carolla gets five stations; David Lee Roth gets seven stations; Mancow, interestingly, didn't land any of the former Stern affiliates.

The new Free FM stations have picked up Tom Leykis in some cases, but I have been incredibly busy as of late and have been unable to update the site with the new information. That is coming soon.

Mancow has a new affiliate: Razor 93.3 (KKZR) in Little Rock, AR, which at the same time shifts from active rock to classic rock. You might recall that the station, which most recently had a local morning show, was a Lex & Terry affiliate until dropping them in May 2004. This sets up a Mancow vs. Bob & Tom battle in Little Rock, as B&T went on the air on cross-town Magic 105.1 (KMJX) late last month.
